From grain to glass Cask

The hops that flavour your beer will taste different depending on where they’re grown. A Cascade hop from Oregon will much zestier than one grown in the UK. What would your local hops taste like?

Grow Your Own
Hops need 6-8 hours of sun a day, so pick your position carefully // Like vines, hops need some kind of structure – a trellis or rope – to climb. They can grow up to 25 feet and weigh up to 12kg so make sure it’s strong // Plant in late spring to avoid frosts // Dig a 3″ trench, pop your rhizome (hop sprout) in, cover lightly with loosely packed soil and top with straw // Keep lightly watered and fertilised // Prune leaves from the bottom 2-3feet of the plant // Harvest top down in early September – when the cones are dry to the touch and leave yellow powder on your fingers // Dry immediately if you plan to save them for later.

Cask Pairings

It's easy to choose a beer if you start with what you want it to do.

Complement: the flavour, colour and body match the food - a delicate fish dish with a light golden ale, a pie with a more flavourful amber ale.

Contrast: where opposites attract - so a fruity beer with a chocolate pudding or a dark beer with coffee.
